Reality Fracture, the new Magic: The Gathering set, will reintroduce Black Lotus in spirit as a token or effect rather than as an actual card, preserving the nostalgia without printing the classic card.

This Lotus-like homage follows precedent set by cards such as Gilded Lotus, Jeweled Lotus, and Lotus Petal, but Reality Fracture delivers the reference through a token rather than a standalone card.

Pre-release events for Reality Fracture begin on September 25, with official previews starting on September 8.

Lead designer Mark Rosewater teased multiple hints about Reality Fracture, including planeswalker-centric mechanics, new dual lands with entry-tapped restrictions, and a unique token type not seen in other mechanics.

The set will heavily feature planeswalkers and alternate-reality versions of characters from various MTG planes, including inverted-color versions like Lyra, Tomik, Winter, and Yoshimaru.

The Lotus token would be generated by another card or ability within the set—potentially via an instant, sorcery, activated ability, or permanent—and may tie into planeswalkers or Echoverse versions of familiar characters.

A central reveal is a Lotus-like artifact token named Lotus that can tap to add three mana of any one color, effectively simulating Black Lotus without printing the actual card.
