Weekend Warriors Slash Risk of Dementia, Stroke, and Depression: New Study Reveals Surprising Health Benefits
August 27, 2024
A recent study published in Nature Aging highlights the health benefits of 'weekend warriors', individuals who engage in most of their physical activity over one or two days each week.
Conducted by a research team from China, the study analyzed data from over 75,000 participants in the UK Biobank, tracking their physical activity over a week.
Among the participants, the average age was 62, with weekend warriors constituting the largest group at 40%, followed by inactive individuals at 32% and regular exercisers at 28%.
Participants were categorized into three groups: inactive (less than 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity), weekend warriors (more than 150 minutes with over 50% on weekends), and regular exercisers (more than 150 minutes spread evenly throughout the week).
The findings revealed that weekend warriors had a 26% reduced risk of dementia, a 21% lower risk of stroke, a 45% lower risk of Parkinson's disease, and a 40% lower risk of depression compared to inactive individuals.
For adults over 65, the protective benefits against neurological diseases were particularly pronounced, emphasizing the importance of physical activity in older populations.
Risk reductions for conditions like dementia and stroke were especially significant in participants aged 65 and older.
The study aligns with World Health Organization recommendations, suggesting that 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week is beneficial.
Overall, the research reinforces the importance of incorporating physical activity into daily routines, regardless of the specific days or methods used.
The study supports previous findings that various forms of physical activity, whether short bursts or longer sessions, contribute positively to health outcomes.
In contrast, regular exercisers showed only a 9% risk reduction for dementia, which did not reach statistical significance, indicating that weekend warriors may experience greater benefits.
The authors acknowledged limitations in categorizing participants and called for further research to explore why weekend warriors might experience these enhanced health benefits.
