First West Nile Virus Mosquitoes Detected in Vanderburgh County, Residents Urged to Take Precautions
August 15, 2025
In 2025, there have been 294 positive mosquito sample groups across 61 counties in Indiana, with 108 positive samples statewide.
The positive mosquito test was from a surveillance trap in Evansville, and the county health department announced this finding on August 14, 2025.
In Vanderburgh County, Evansville, a group of mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile Virus for the first time this year, marking the first positive mosquito test in the county in 2025, following the state's first human case reported in July.
Residents are advised to avoid outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours, eliminate standing water, keep grass cut, and use EPA-registered repellents to protect against bites.
The only human infection reported in Indiana so far this year is in Vanderburgh County, where the individual was likely exposed near the Jordan River in late July and is now recovering at home.
West Nile Virus is primarily transmitted by mosquitoes that bite infected birds; humans are dead-end hosts and do not transmit the virus further.
There is no specific treatment for West Nile Virus; care focuses on managing symptoms.
Most at risk are immunocompromised individuals and those aged 50 and older.
People experiencing symptoms of West Nile Virus should consult healthcare providers for diagnosis and treatment.
Most West Nile Virus infections are mild or asymptomatic, but severe cases can lead to neurological issues such as inflammation of the brain and spinal cord, muscle paralysis, or death, especially in individuals over 60 or those with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms can include fever, headache, body aches, and in severe cases, high fever, stiff neck, disorientation, tremors, muscle weakness, or seizures; about 1 in 150 infected may develop serious illness.
The health department emphasizes mosquito control efforts like habitat elimination, public education, and treating standing water for larvae to reduce transmission risk.
