Morning Coffee Boosts Happiness, Says New Study; Caffeine's Mood Effects Analyzed
August 16, 2025
A recent study from the University of Bielefeld and the University of Warwick found that regular coffee drinkers tend to feel happier and more enthusiastic after their first cup of coffee in the morning.
Caffeine consumption is widespread globally, with about 80% of adults drinking caffeinated beverages, and interestingly, even wild animals like bees and bumblebees prefer nectar containing caffeine, highlighting its natural presence in the animal kingdom.
The mood-boosting effects of caffeine are primarily due to its ability to block adenosine receptors in the brain, which increases dopamine activity, leading to feelings of wakefulness and happiness.
While caffeine can enhance mood, it also has the potential for dependence, and individual reactions vary, with some experiencing negative mood effects.
Importantly, the study found no significant differences in caffeine's mood effects based on individuals' caffeine habits, depression, anxiety, or sleep issues.
However, the study does not establish causality, so it remains unclear whether coffee directly causes increased happiness or if other factors are involved.
