France's Literary Boom: 5.45% More New Novels in 2024 Despite Decline in Overall Publishing
July 3, 2025
The upcoming rentrée littéraire in France is set to see an increase in new novels, with the total rising by 5.45% to 484 titles, up from 459 last year.
This growth is particularly notable among French authors, who will see a 10.6% increase in new novels, rising from 311 to 344, alongside a 7.35% rise in debut novels from 68 to 73.
In addition to domestic works, notable foreign authors such as Ken Follett, Jonathan Coe, and Joyce Maynard will also have new titles released.
However, the overall number of foreign titles published in translation is expected to decline by 5.4%, dropping from 148 to 140.
Despite the increase in new novels, the total number of new titles published across all categories in France fell by 19% in 2024, down to 36,232 from 36,819 in 2023, and significantly lower than the 44,660 published in 2019.
This recent uptick in new novels marks a reversal from the declining trend observed in previous years, where the number of new titles published dropped dramatically from 701 in 2010 to just 511 in 2020.
