Tariq Ashkanani was announced as the winner of the 2025 McIlvanney Prize at the Bloody Scotland crime writing festival in Stirling, for his novel 'The Midnight King'.

His novel was praised by judges for its atmospheric dread and compelling exploration of the Cole family, drawing comparisons to a page-turning thriller.

The finalists for this year's prize included notable authors such as Sir Ian Rankin, Callum McSorley, Denise Mina, and Liam McIlvanney, William McIlvanney’s son.

The award was presented on the festival's opening night by 2024 winner Chris Brookmyre, in a ceremony attended by notable figures including Sir Ian Rankin.

The judging panel, comprising crime writer Alex Gray, broadcaster Bryan Burnett, and Kenny Tweeddale, highlighted the strength and originality of the winning entries.

The festival, running until September 14, 2025, features various panels, including Ashkanani on the Dangerous Minds panel and Goodman on the Spies West, Eyes East panel.
