Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer announced that he predicts the ongoing war, which began with Hamas's invasion on October 7, 2023, will conclude within a year.

This announcement marks the first time a senior Israeli official has provided a specific timeframe for the conflict, which has already resulted in 1,200 Israeli deaths and 251 hostages taken to Gaza.

Dermer described Israel as being in the 'backstretch' of the war, emphasizing the need for a decisive victory to pave the way for future peace agreements in the region.

He reiterated that Israel's approach to negotiations will not prioritize the return of hostages over the war effort, nor vice versa, maintaining a dual focus on ending Hamas's rule while securing hostage releases.

Families of hostages have been pressing the Israeli government for a deal that would ensure the return of the 59 hostages currently in Gaza, even if it means compromising on military efforts against Hamas.

Opposition Leader Yair Lapid criticized Dermer's timeline, warning that a year-long wait could result in the deaths of remaining hostages, including 35 who are confirmed dead.

Lapid also called for clarity on who would replace Hamas in Gaza, indicating a need for a defined goal in the ongoing conflict.

Dermer highlighted the importance of both demilitarization and deradicalization of Palestinian society for achieving long-term peace, using Saudi Arabia as an example of societal progress away from radicalism.

He suggested that many countries would seek to establish peace with Israel if it achieves victory, stating, 'In the Middle East, when you win, when you’re strong, that’s what attracts others.'

In his remarks, Dermer praised former US President Donald Trump for his strong stance against Iran, expressing confidence that Trump will continue to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
