Saudi Arabia's NEOM Green Hydrogen Project Nears Completion, Aims for 2027 Ammonia Exports
June 13, 2025
Saudi Arabia's ambitious NEOM Green Hydrogen Project is now 80% complete and is set to commence green ammonia exports by 2027.
This groundbreaking project features a large-scale green hydrogen production facility that will be powered by 4 GW of solar and wind energy, making it the world's largest renewable-powered ammonia production site.
Once operational, the facility is expected to produce up to 600 metric tonnes of green hydrogen daily, which could help offset 5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
Despite facing challenges in the global hydrogen market, NEOM has already secured early commitments, including a memorandum of understanding with Germany’s SEFE for a potential supply of 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030.
Saudi Arabia's hydrogen strategy is further supported by ongoing investments in oil and gas, aiming to strike a balance between renewable energy expansion and fossil fuel production.
In line with its sustainability goals, Saudi Aramco plans to enhance its oil production sustainability and reduce emissions by 15% by 2035 through innovative technologies and carbon capture initiatives.
The NEOM project is a collaborative effort between ACWA Power, Air Products, and NEOM, aligning with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative.
Beyond energy, Saudi Arabia is also focusing on expanding its mining sector, with plans to increase its GDP contribution from $17 billion to $75 billion by 2035 through strategic partnerships and investments in critical minerals.
