On August 7, 2025, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates, will begin an official visit to Russia.

The focus of this visit is to enhance the strategic partnership between the UAE and Russia, particularly in economic, trade, investment, and energy cooperation.

Currently, trade turnover between Russia and the UAE stands at $11.5 billion, and the UAE aims to double this figure within the next five years.

Sheikh Mohammed highlighted the elimination of many customs duties on approximately 85% of commodity positions between the two countries, which should facilitate trade.

Despite the U.S. expressing concerns over the UAE's role in facilitating trade that helps Russia circumvent sanctions, the UAE has maintained a neutral stance in the Russia-Ukraine war.

The UAE has called for peace in the conflict while providing a haven for Russian expatriates and businesses, with around 4,000 Russian firms operating within its borders.

Analysts suggest that the UAE's deepening ties with Russia reflect its desire for a diversified foreign policy, balancing relationships with the U.S., Russia, and China.

During discussions, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the importance of their interaction through various platforms, including the UN, and noted the UAE's recent full-scale membership in BRICS.

The leaders are expected to address regional and international issues of mutual interest during their meeting.

They will also discuss current international issues, including the situation in the Middle East and regional security matters.

Despite potential tensions, the U.S. has refrained from imposing sanctions on the UAE, recognizing its role as a mediator between Russia and Western powers.

Sheikh Mohammed noted the rapid development of relations between the UAE and Russia in recent years, underscoring the significance of this visit.
