The Tampa Bay Rays have sent their top prospect, Junior Caminero, back to the minor-league camp.

Junior Caminero will not be on the active roster for Opening Day despite being the No. 2 prospect in baseball.

At only 20 years old, Caminero requires additional development time in the minors, as determined by the Rays.

Last season, Caminero showcased his potential with 31 home runs across High-A and Double-A levels.

The Rays' decision arrives despite an existing gap at shortstop, with Wander Franco on administrative leave.

The organization maintains the expectation that Caminero will join the active roster in the future.
