Charlotte FC has reached a deal in principle to transfer striker Patrick Agyemang to Derby County for approximately $8 million, with an additional $2 million in potential bonuses.

Agyemang, who was drafted by Charlotte FC in the 2023 MLS Super Draft, has been a standout player, leading the team with six goals in the current season and ten goals in the previous season.

The 24-year-old striker has garnered interest from several European clubs, including a previous $4 million offer from Luton Town, which was rejected.

Agyemang's move to Derby is particularly significant as he competes for a spot on the U.S. roster for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, facing competition from players like Josh Sargent.

Throughout his career with Charlotte FC, Agyemang has scored 18 goals and provided six assists in 63 games, and he made his U.S. national team debut in January 2025, scoring twice in two matches.

Following Agyemang's departure, Charlotte FC may look to strengthen their squad when the summer transfer window opens on July 24.

Currently, Agyemang is the starting striker for the U.S. team in the summer's Gold Cup, where he has scored five goals in ten appearances.

To secure his position on the national team, Agyemang must demonstrate consistent scoring at Derby, as past examples like Ricardo Pepi highlight the risks of moving close to a major tournament.

In an interview, Agyemang expressed his desire to focus on the present while also acknowledging the allure of playing in Europe.

Charlotte FC manager Dean Smith noted that while Agyemang had not expressed a desire to leave, he acknowledged that every player has a price.

MLS and USMNT insider Tom Bogert reported that Charlotte FC was patient in securing the best deal for Agyemang, who had multiple suitors.

Although Agyemang has agreed to the move, Charlotte FC has yet to officially accept Derby's offer.
