Five NCAA Programs Shift Conferences in 2025, Pac-12 and WCC See Major Changes
July 1, 2025
As of July 1, 2025, five Division I programs have officially changed conferences, marking a relatively calm period of realignment following the significant upheaval of the previous season.
The 2024-25 season was marked by substantial changes in college basketball, with numerous high-profile teams shifting conferences, which resulted in a record 14 NCAA Tournament bids for the SEC.
The upcoming 2025-26 season will signal the end of an era for Mountain West basketball, as several top programs are set to join the reformed Pac-12, reshaping the competitive landscape.
Oregon State and Washington State will also be moving to the reformed Pac-12, making the upcoming season their second and final year as temporary members of the West Coast Conference.
Seattle has joined the West Coast Conference from the Western Athletic Conference, temporarily increasing the WCC to 12 teams before Gonzaga's planned departure for the Pac-12 in 2026-27.
Despite the temporary increase in membership, the WCC is expected to revert back to nine members after the 2025-26 season, although it will benefit from a strong Gonzaga presence during this transition.
UMass is transitioning from the Atlantic 10 to the Mid-American Conference, a move perceived as a downgrade in basketball but advantageous for their football program.
Delaware and Missouri State are moving from the Colonial Athletic Association and Missouri Valley Conference respectively to Conference USA to participate in FBS football.
The University of New Haven is also making a transition, moving from Division II to Division I and joining the Northeast Conference after a previous season record of 12-17 in D-II.
