The Kansas City Chiefs have decided to exercise the fifth-year options on cornerback Trent McDuffie and defensive end George Karlaftis, extending their contracts through the 2026 season.

In the 2023 season, Karlaftis tied for the team lead with 10.5 regular-season sacks, showcasing his significant impact on the field.

The Chiefs must finalize these fifth-year options by the May 1 deadline, highlighting the importance of retaining their defensive core.

Karlaftis' option is projected to cost the team $15.2 million, while McDuffie's will amount to $13.62 million against the salary cap.

Despite a strong performance in 2024, McDuffie was not selected for the Pro Bowl, which could have significantly increased his fifth-year option value.

Had McDuffie made the Pro Bowl, his fifth-year option could have risen to approximately $17.1 million or even more than $20 million with multiple selections.

His impressive 2023 season included 80 tackles, three sacks, and seven passes defended, further establishing him as a key player in the Chiefs' secondary.

Exercising these options could help lower the initial salary cap numbers for McDuffie and Karlaftis, aiding the Chiefs in managing other contracts, including that of Trey Smith.

Karlaftis, who was the 30th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has solidified his role as a top edge rusher, recording 24.5 sacks in his first three seasons.

McDuffie, selected 21st overall in the same draft, has started all 43 games of his career, earning first-team All-Pro honors in 2023 and second-team All-Pro recognition in 2024.

This decision underscores the Chiefs' confidence in both players as essential contributors to their defense, which has reached three consecutive Super Bowls.

Smith, who has expressed a desire to stay with the team long-term, is also in negotiations for a contract extension that could impact the Chiefs' salary cap strategy.
