Blizzard Launches Overwatch 2 Mini-Season to Test 6v6 Format Demand
January 31, 2025
Blizzard is set to launch a competitive mini-season for 6v6 gameplay in Overwatch 2, coinciding with the midseason patch of Season 15, expected in March 2025.
Game director Aaron Keller emphasized that this mini-season will help gauge player demand for the 6v6 format.
Players are encouraged to participate in the mini-season to show support for the 6v6 mode, which could impact its future in the game.
In a bid to enhance the competitive experience, the rank system will be adjusted to allow a greater percentage of players to reach higher ranks, particularly Champion.
A new weapon variant, potentially featuring a chrome design, will be unlockable with Competitive points, while the Jade Weapons will be phased out after the current season.
To assist players in unlocking the new weapon variant, they can earn double Competitive points during the last Drives event of the season.
Starting in Season 15, Clash maps will be removed from ranked play due to balance and clarity issues, but they will still be available in Quick Play and unranked modes.
Blizzard is also focused on improving Clash maps to enhance the competitive experience.
Previous tests of the 6v6 format included 6v6 Role Queue and 6v6 Min 1 Max 3, with Role Queue accounting for nearly 10% of total play hours during its event.
Despite the interest in 6v6 gameplay, Keller noted that the core format of Overwatch will remain unchanged for now, as the demand for 6v6 is still uncertain.
These upcoming updates are crucial as Overwatch 2 faces competition from the newly released game Marvel Rivals.
Blizzard will unveil major PVP changes and new content, including heroes and maps, during an Overwatch 2 Spotlight event scheduled for February 12, 2025, at 1 PM ET.
