New 'Darth Vader' Isopod Species Discovered in Vietnam's Waters, Becomes Culinary Delicacy
January 14, 2025
A new species of giant isopod, named Bathynomus vaderi, has been identified in Vietnamese waters, with its unique appearance resembling Darth Vader's helmet.
This remarkable isopod can grow up to 30 centimeters in length and weigh over one kilogram, classifying it as a supergiant isopod.
The study underscores the urgent need for exploration of deep-sea ecosystems, as human activities like fishing and mineral extraction increasingly threaten these habitats.
While the rising commercial interest in giant isopods poses threats due to increased fishing pressure, it also presents opportunities for implementing sustainable fishing practices.
Distinctive features of B. vaderi include a pronounced hip bone depression and a bony ridge on its coracoid bone, setting it apart from other isopods.
In recent years, live Bathynomus vaderi has become a common sight in seafood markets across major Vietnamese cities, including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
The species was discovered not during a marine expedition, but rather when researchers from Hanoi University purchased four specimens from a fish market in Quy Nhơn City in March 2022.
The specimens were sent to crustacean specialist Peter Ng from the National University of Singapore for further study, alongside Indonesian expert Conni Sidabalok.
The discovery of Bathynomus vaderi highlights significant knowledge gaps regarding deep-sea biodiversity, emphasizing the need for further research in this underexplored area.
This species has gained popularity in Vietnamese cuisine, often compared in taste to lobster, and has transitioned from low-value bycatch to a sought-after delicacy.
The research team, which included experts from Singapore and Indonesia, collaborated with Vietnamese researchers to study the specimens and published their findings in the journal ZooKeys.
Ng expressed enthusiasm for Star Wars, noting that the resemblance to Darth Vader's mask inspired the name, and highlighted the creature's habitat in deep waters between 800 to 1200 meters.
