NYU Langone Health has named William Gordon Frankle, MD, MBA, as the new chair of the Department of Psychiatry, effective September 2026, succeeding Charles R. Marmar after a 17-year tenure.

Frankle brings extensive clinical leadership at NYU Langone Brooklyn, including vice chair of Psychiatry and chief of psychiatry, plus a track record of expanding behavioral health programs and research.

He launched a psychiatry residency program with a focus on community psychiatry and created the Enhanced Treatment and Recovery program for serious mental illness, which earned the American Psychiatric Association’s Silver Award for Psychiatric Services Achievement in 2024.

NYU Langone operates a comprehensive network with seven inpatient locations, the Perlmutter Cancer Center, more than 320 outpatient sites across New York and Florida, two medical schools, and a broad research enterprise that enables integration of behavioral health with primary and specialty care.

The Department of Psychiatry at NYU Langone Health ranks highly, tied for No. 8 nationally by U.S. News & World Report and No. 6 in NIH psychiatric grant funding per the Blue Ridge Institute, with Joint Commission accreditation for inpatient units and a top-ranked Doximity residency program.

The leadership transition positions a chair experienced in scaling community-based behavioral health within a large academic network, with a mandate to extend this model while preserving research and training strengths.

Frankle’s background spans McGill University, New York Medical College, MGH/McLean residency, Columbia University research fellowship, and an MBA in medical management from UMass, establishing him as a nationally recognized expert in schizophrenia and neuroreceptor imaging with NIH funding and 50+ publications.

He is known for PET studies of dopamine and GABA transmission in schizophrenia, using neuroimaging to advance understanding of neuroreceptor abnormalities.
