DoE Launches $215M Quantum Competition to Spur Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computers by 2028

The Department of Energy has launched the Quantum Genesis Q Competition, a $215 million milestone-based contest designed to fund private-sector teams building the first fault-tolerant, scientifically relevant quantum computer, with early awards and a shared incentive pool tied to achieving specific logical-qubit milestones.
Phase I awards can total up to $1.5 million per awardee, including $250,000 for approved plans and $1.25 million upon delivery of a validated prototype, with up to 10 winners anticipated.
A second phase would divide a $100 million incentive pool among successful entrants targeting a first-generation fully fault-tolerant quantum computer (SRQC) by fall 2028, using benchmarks such as 10 logical qubits for 10^3 hard operations and 100 logical qubits for 10^5 hard operations.
The DoE plans a technology-neutral approach spanning superconducting circuits, neutral atoms, trapped ions, photonics, and spin qubits, with collaboration across national labs, universities, and industry to co-design hardware, algorithms, and software.
DOE leadership emphasizes that the goal is useful scientific performance rather than merely increasing hardware scale, with applications spanning drug discovery, catalyst design, fusion-materials, and fundamental physics simulations.
A dedicated testbed will develop rigorous characterization and validation tools across the computing stack—from hardware and gates to logical architectures, algorithms, applications, and classical control systems.
The program accepts multiple architectures, ensuring no single approach has a head start and signaling a shift toward funding proven capability rather than roadmap promises.
Near-term fusion-energy materials milestones include quantum calculations for tritium binding and plasma-response models, with longer-term aims by 2030 to simulate integrated tritium production and extreme reactor conditions to speed commercialization.
Overall, the initiative seeks to accelerate hardware benchmarks and demonstrate quantum systems capable of solving complex scientific problems while advancing AI adoption and compute infrastructure.
DOE frames quantum computing as essential scientific infrastructure, with a companion roadmap outlining grand challenges in fusion materials, next-gen batteries, and superconductors.
The program aligns with the President’s Executive Order on quantum innovation and builds on DOE roadmaps and advisory reports to broaden access to quantum capabilities.
