Colorado is emerging as a central hub for the United States’ future space exploration and defense, highlighted by the 41st Space Symposium in Colorado Springs and the Artemis II mission.

The article emphasizes that Colorado will be at the heart of the U.S. space quest, fueled by a robust local aerospace sector, strategic government partnerships, and ongoing investments in space tech and defense infrastructure.

NASA aims to establish a permanent lunar outpost to test deep-space technologies, with plans to field a space-based nuclear reactor by 2028 and a moon-based reactor by 2030, in collaboration with the DoD and DOE.

The Habitable Worlds Observatory, a next-generation space telescope intended to image distant exoplanets, is being developed with Colorado-based aerospace players guiding the technologies for this mission.

Colorado has played a significant role in Artemis, with local organizations contributing to key components: Lockheed Martin Space built the Orion capsule, United Launch Alliance fabricated the upper stage, and Frontgrade Technologies supplied components for Orion’s computers.

Colorado’s aerospace ecosystem, including Lockheed Martin, L3Harris, and Bluestaq, is expected to benefit from a projected doubling of the U.S. Space Force budget to about $71 billion, given the state hosts more than half of the Space Force workforce.

The Space Symposium announced expansion and investment in Colorado, such as SelectTech Services Corporation’s expansion to El Paso County, underscoring the region’s talent pool and proximity to federal defense and space programs.

Officials stressed that even with Space Command relocating to Alabama, Colorado Springs and the state will remain uniquely positioned to lead in defense innovation and national security in space.
