Space Force Seeks $1 Billion for New Operations Centers Amid Expanding Budget and Manpower Plans
May 15, 2026
The Space Force is seeking $1 billion to establish four new space operations centers at Kirtland AFB, Redstone Arsenal, Schriever SFB, and Grand Forks AFB to expand its operational footprint and capabilities.
This move comes amid a Pentagon directive from last year to reduce permanent-change-of-station moves, urging cost savings while weighing potential impacts on career development and location desirability.
To improve quality of life and stability for families, the Space Force is also considering longer tour lengths for Guardians at bases beyond the standard three-year tours.
The planned centers are designed for geographically dispersed operations, enabling mission transfer between centers as cycles end to provide around-the-clock capabilities and resilience.
Brig. Gen. Christopher Fernengel notes that staying in place could be paired with new regional opportunities, allowing multiple assignments without hindering career growth.
Funding is earmarked to sustain base operations at the centers, including civil engineers, fire protection, force protection, lawyers, and medical staff.
Schriever Space Force Base serves as a blueprint, with capacity planned for up to 10 operations units per center, though the Colorado base currently operates at maximum capacity.
In its fiscal 2027 budget request, the Space Force seeks $1.8 billion for personnel, a $252 million increase over the 2026 enacted amount.
Overall, the move is part of broader efforts to grow manpower and facilities, with a requested budget increase from $40 billion to $71 billion, and plans to add 2,800 Guardians next year and double the force within five years.
