The UK government has unveiled a national space strategy backed by a record 7.8 billion investment through 2030 to boost space security, defence, technology, and economic growth, while enhancing connectivity.

About 40 million pounds will fund on-orbit servicing, assembly, and manufacturing technologies for spacecraft and debris management.

Key funding includes 148 million pounds for European rocket programs, 30 million for SaxaVord Spaceport in Shetland, 163 million for space science and exploration missions, 57 million for rail connectivity, 190 million for astronomy/space science research, and 9 million for space weather forecasting.

The Ministry of Defence will lead concept studies into timing technologies independent of GPS vulnerabilities, with most positioning, navigation, and timing development handled by civilian agencies.

Analysts say the policy framework could strengthen domestic manufacturing, supply chains, and sovereign telecommunications by tying UK capabilities to Europe’s satellite programs.

The strategy treats space as a critical domain for national security and economics, emphasizing ongoing collaboration with partners, industry, and public bodies to build a resilient space infrastructure.

Europe’s roughly 15% share of telecom-satellite partnerships is set to grow, with initiatives like IRIS2 signaling a push to expand European capability and resilience; the UK aims to secure a meaningful role in this evolving ecosystem.

European initiatives, including the EU’s IRIS2 sovereign multi-orbit contract, are driving regional satellite growth and encourage closer UK-European regulatory and supply-chain alignment to bolster resilience across telecoms, defence, and Earth observation.

Europe accounts for about 15% of global telecom-satellite partnerships, with growth expected as operators adopt satellite connectivity layers.

Industry leaders view the space strategy as part of a broader industrial plan that leverages UK technology, creates opportunities for national companies, and strengthens ties with Europe to reduce dependency on US constellations.

A core objective is secure satellite communications, space surveillance, military intelligence, and independent access to orbit through an integrated national satellite communications system resilient to disruptions.
