November 21, 2024
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned anti-Semitic vandalism in Woollahra, Sydney, following an overnight attack that involved a car being set ablaze and several others graffitied with anti-Israel slogans.
Detective Acting Superintendent Adam Solah indicated that the damage could exceed $100,000, describing the actions as offensive and a violation of community standards.
Premier Minns condemned the acts as 'absolutely deplorable' and announced the formation of Strike Force Mylor to investigate the incidents.
Emergency services responded to multiple reports of a burning car around 12:30 AM, confirming that the vehicle was destroyed despite efforts to extinguish the flames.
In response to the incidents, police have established multiple crime scenes and are actively seeking information from the public to aid their investigation.
Local Liberal MP Kellie Sloane stated that the incident has left the Jewish community feeling vulnerable and scared, describing the attack as senseless and intimidating.
Albanese emphasized that international conflicts should not serve as a platform for prejudice within Australia, expressing trust in law enforcement to address the situation.
Emergency services reported that a total of 11 vehicles were damaged, alongside vandalism to nearby buildings, with graffiti found across several streets.
David Ossip, president of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, highlighted that this attack is part of a rising trend of intimidation against the Jewish community, insisting on zero tolerance for such criminal behavior.
The vandalism occurred shortly after midnight, with CCTV capturing two individuals spraying offensive slogans on over a dozen vehicles on Wellington Street.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns expressed horror at the incidents, promising that those responsible would be brought to justice and emphasizing significant police resources dedicated to the case.
This incident follows a previous attack where public structures were vandalized with Hamas-related graffiti in the area just over a month ago.
