Healthscope Ends Bupa Contracts, Impacting 6 Million Australians and Private Hospital Access
November 21, 2024
On November 17, 2023, Healthscope announced the termination of contracts with Bupa and 30 other funds represented by the Australian Health Services Alliance (AHSA), impacting over 6 million Australians.
As a result of this withdrawal, patients at 38 private hospitals, including those in Sydney and Melbourne, will lose their health insurance coverage, affecting their scheduled surgeries and procedures.
Healthscope, which is currently $1.6 billion in debt following a $4.1 billion acquisition in 2019, has been advocating for health funds to increase their payments to address rising healthcare costs.
A recent federal government review revealed that private hospitals' profit margins have halved in the last five years, largely due to escalating operational costs.
Greg Horan, Healthscope's CEO, emphasized the viability crisis facing Australia's private hospitals, which are grappling with a 5.7% increase in healthcare costs over the past year.
Horan explained that the decision to terminate agreements was influenced by threats of legal action from insurers regarding the imposition of up to $100 out-of-pocket fees for Bupa and AHSA members.
Critics, including AHSA chief executive Andrew Sando, have condemned Healthscope's actions, arguing that the company is prioritizing profits over patient care.
Horan described the ongoing situation as a result of 'lawfare' from insurers, highlighting the urgent need for fair funding to sustain hospital operations.
The agreements with AHSA funds are set to end on March 4, 2024, further complicating the healthcare landscape for affected patients.
From February 20, 2024, Bupa's 4 million customers will face difficult choices: switching health funds, opting for different hospitals, or incurring significant out-of-pocket fees for treatment at Healthscope facilities.
Healthscope operates several key private hospitals, including Norwest and Melbourne private hospitals, which are now at risk of reduced patient access due to these changes.
