November 29, 2024
Australia has secured a historic $385 million in funding from the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) to support its athletes in preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and Paralympics.
This funding will significantly enhance support for Para sports, doubling the investment and increasing the number of supported summer Olympic and Paralympic programs from 54 to 68.
Matt Carroll, CEO of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), praised the funding, emphasizing the crucial role of sports in promoting physical and mental health, as well as fostering community cohesion and national pride.
AOC president Ian Chesterman highlighted that this investment is essential for Australia's success at the upcoming 2032 Brisbane Olympics and Paralympics.
Additionally, the funding will support Winter Olympians as they prepare for the 2026 Milano-Cortina Games through the ASC's 'Win Well and Play Well' initiative.
Federal Minister for Sport Anika Wells stressed the importance of creating opportunities for children and community athletes, aiming for a safe and sustainable sports system that encourages participation.
Reflecting on recent successes, Chesterman noted the Australian team's impressive performance at the Paris Olympics, where they secured 18 gold, 19 silver, and 16 bronze medals.
Kieren Perkins, CEO of the ASC, underscored the significance of uniting and inspiring Australians through sport in the lead-up to the Brisbane 2032 Games.
The funding announcement is viewed as a foundational step in preparing a large team of over 500 athletes for the diverse sports featured in the Los Angeles program, including cricket, lacrosse, and flag football.
