Josh Inglis has been appointed captain of Australia for the upcoming Twenty20 series against Pakistan and the one-day international at Optus Stadium on November 10, 2024.

His promotion to captain comes as Mitchell Marsh is currently on paternity leave, which delayed the decision until now.

This will be Inglis' first experience leading the senior team, making him the 30th player to captain Australia in ODIs and the 14th in T20Is.

Inglis, who recently scored 49 runs in an ODI against Pakistan, is stepping into this role after showcasing excellent form, including breaking the record for the fastest T20I century for Australia.

Chief selector George Bailey expressed confidence in Inglis's leadership, noting he will have support from experienced players like Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis.

Despite his strong domestic performances, Inglis is not expected to make his Test debut soon, as he will focus on the T20I squad until the first Test against India begins on November 22, 2024.

Key players such as Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Marnus Labuschagne, and Steve Smith will miss the third ODI to prepare for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against India.

New additions to the squad for the third ODI include pacers Spencer Johnson, Lance Morris, and Xavier Bartlett, along with wicketkeeper-batter Josh Philippe.

Lance Morris has been brought in to allow Josh Hazlewood to focus on red-ball preparation ahead of the India Test series.

Selectors are still determining a replacement for retired opener David Warner, with Nathan McSweeney and Marcus Harris set to open in the upcoming Australia A match against India A.

Inglis's previous captaincy experience includes leading the Prime Minister's XI in a drawn match against the West Indies in 2022.

Inglis has scored 679 runs in 26 T20I matches, earning him the captaincy over established players like Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa.
