Nvidia Unveils GeForce Now Changes: New Tier, Gameplay Caps, and User Backlash
November 7, 2024
Nvidia will allow users to roll over up to 15 hours of unused playtime to the next month, with additional hours available for purchase at $2.99 for Performance members and $5.99 for Ultimate members.
Current subscribers with unlimited gameplay will be grandfathered in, allowing them to retain their benefits until January 2026.
The rebranded Performance membership will replace the previous Priority membership and includes significant upgrades, such as access to GeForce RTX GPUs.
Nvidia is set to introduce a new Performance tier for its GeForce Now cloud gaming service, which will feature a monthly gameplay cap of 100 hours starting in January 2024.
Despite the changes, Nvidia has announced the addition of seven new games to the service, including popular titles like Planet Coaster 2 and Starcraft II.
Community reactions have been largely negative, particularly on social media platforms like Reddit, where users express dissatisfaction with the new playtime cap.
Nvidia claims that approximately 94% of current users will find the 100-hour limit sufficient for their gaming needs, as most users do not exceed this amount.
The company aims to maintain subscription prices while enhancing service quality, despite reporting nearly $17 billion in profit from AI chipsets in its last quarter.
Nvidia continues to offer a free basic plan for entry-level cloud gaming, along with day passes starting at $2.99, providing options for users with varying needs.
The Ultimate subscription will remain unchanged at €22 per month, offering access to high-end graphics capabilities and 4K resolution.
To ease the transition, Nvidia is providing a temporary 25% discount on Ultimate and Performance day passes until November 22, 2024, which can be upgraded to monthly memberships.
Overall, these updates reflect Nvidia's strategy to enhance its cloud gaming service while addressing user concerns and maintaining competitive pricing.
