December 11, 2024
Demi Agoglia, a 26-year-old mother of three from Salford, Greater Manchester, tragically died following a Brazilian butt lift procedure in Istanbul, Turkey, just three days after her surgery on January 8, 2024.
Agoglia was influenced by a celebrity's social media advertisement for the surgery, despite her family's concerns, and traveled to Turkey with her partner, Bradley Jones, after booking the procedure through Comfort Zone Surgery.
Prior to the surgery, Demi struggled with mental health issues, including ADHD and bipolar disorder, and was described by her mother as being very conscious about her appearance.
After the operation, Demi exhibited concerning symptoms such as shivering and chest tightness, but received inadequate care from unqualified Comfort Zone staff, who only checked her blood pressure.
The day after her surgery, Agoglia collapsed and was taken to Avrasya Hospital, where she died shortly after arrival.
An autopsy report indicated that Agoglia died from a microscopic fat embolism, a rare but known complication associated with Brazilian butt lift procedures.
Coroner John Pollard ruled her death a result of misadventure contributed to by neglect, highlighting the absence of proper informed consent, pre-operative care, and post-operative follow-up.
Following the inquest, Pollard announced plans to write to UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting, advocating for stricter regulations on cosmetic surgeries conducted abroad.
The inquest emphasized the need for regulatory action to prevent incidents like Agoglia's death, criticizing the standard of care in Turkish clinics compared to UK standards.
The inquest faced challenges in obtaining cooperation from Turkish authorities and medical staff involved in the procedure, leaving many questions unanswered about the quality of care provided.
Expert testimony criticized the lack of appropriate post-operative care, with Dr. Omar Tillo describing the staff's actions as bizarre, particularly their attempt to feed Agoglia cucumber after she collapsed.
Agoglia's family expressed deep sorrow over her death and urged caution for others considering similar procedures abroad, emphasizing the tragic loss to their family.
