Microsoft Hikes Office 365 Prices in Australia, SEA Amid Copilot AI Concerns
December 26, 2024
The integration of Copilot into Microsoft 365 subscriptions was officially rolled out on December 26, 2024.
Microsoft has raised the price of its consumer Office 365 subscription service in Australia and Southeast Asia, coinciding with the integration of its AI feature, Copilot.
Businesses have expressed mixed feelings about Copilot, citing concerns over the accuracy of its outputs, data privacy, and the overall value it provides for the cost.
Unlike users in some countries, those in the affected regions cannot opt out of the AI features, raising concerns about user choice and autonomy.
Functioning as a chatbot and content generator, Copilot assists users with tasks such as writing emails, summarizing meetings, and creating PowerPoint slides.
In Australia, the subscription price will rise from A$11 to A$16, marking a substantial 45% increase, while U.S. enterprise customers will face a 5% price hike starting in April 2024.
Users have taken to social media to voice their dissatisfaction, likening the intrusive pop-ups from Copilot to Clippy, the infamous Office assistant from the late 1990s.
This pricing strategy aligns with Google's approach, which also offers an add-on for similar AI features.
Copilot, developed using OpenAI technology, is a key component of CEO Satya Nadella's strategy to enhance Microsoft's software offerings for both consumer and corporate markets.
Some users, like Australian YouTuber Alistair Fleming, reported that their subscription price increased without clear notification, raising questions about transparency.
The price increase is part of Microsoft's broader strategy to monetize its significant investments in generative AI, which includes approximately $14 billion invested in OpenAI.
Microsoft has not yet commented on the recent price increases for its 365 service.
