New $20M Responsible AI Research Centre Launched to Drive Safe and Trustworthy AI Development
December 9, 2024
RAIR will focus on four key research themes: tackling misinformation, ensuring safe AI interactions in the physical world, developing diverse AI systems, and enhancing the explainability of AI.
The centre aims to create AI systems that benefit society while minimizing negative consequences, highlighting the importance of trust in AI decision-making.
Jon Whittle, Director of Data61 at CSIRO, pointed out the environmental impact of AI, advocating for smaller, more efficient models to reduce resource consumption.
Professor Simon Lucey, the interim director of RAIR, noted the need for innovation alongside safeguards to ensure safety and reliability in sectors that have yet to benefit from AI.
The government is implementing proactive measures, including revitalizing the National AI Centre and establishing mandatory safety guidelines for AI use.
The Responsible AI Research Centre (RAIR) has been launched through a partnership between CSIRO and the University of Adelaide’s Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) to develop frameworks for responsible AI.
The South Australian Government has committed a total of $5 million to establish RAIR, complementing a prior $6 million investment allocated to AIML earlier this year.
Overall funding for RAIR totals $20 million, with contributions including $10 million from the University of Adelaide, $5 million from CSIRO, and $5 million from the South Australian Government.
Federal Minister Ed Husic emphasized the economic potential of trustworthy AI, projecting that AI and automation could contribute between $170 billion and $600 billion to Australia's GDP by 2030.
Deputy Premier of South Australia, Susan Close, stressed the importance of transitioning Australia from being a consumer to a producer of AI technology.
RAIR represents AIML's third major AI initiative in 2024, following the establishment of the CommBank Centre for Foundational AI Research and the Industrial AI program.
Additionally, the RAIR Centre will explore how AI can assist in climate change adaptations, further broadening its impact.
