Queensland Probes Biosecurity Breach: Infectious Virus Samples Missing from Government Lab
December 9, 2024
Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls announced an urgent investigation into the disappearance of approximately 323 infectious virus samples from the Public Health Virology Laboratory, a significant biosecurity breach.
The investigation aims to scrutinize the incident, assess existing policies and procedures, and ensure regulatory compliance and staff conduct are maintained.
In response to the incident, the Health Department has implemented measures to prevent future occurrences, including staff retraining and audits of permits and storage practices.
Officials have reassured the public that there is no immediate risk from the missing samples, as virus samples degrade quickly outside controlled environments.
Health Minister Tim Nicholls emphasized the need for a thorough investigation due to the serious breach of biosecurity protocols.
The missing samples include those of the Hendra virus, Lyssavirus, and Hantavirus, all of which pose serious health risks to humans and animals.
This investigation, classified as a Part 9 inquiry, was initiated due to the inability to track down the missing samples, which were last accounted for in August 2023.
Retired Supreme Court Justice Martin Daubney will lead the investigation, with Julian Druce serving as co-investigator.
Dr. Gerrard explained that the samples are likely to have been destroyed through routine autoclaving without proper documentation.
No cases of Hendra or Lyssavirus have been reported among humans in Queensland in the past five years, and there have been no reported Hantavirus infections in Australia.
Hendra virus, primarily found in Australia, is transmitted by fruit bats and can infect both humans and horses, while Lyssavirus is spread through bites from rabid animals, and Hantavirus is associated with contact with rodent excretions.
Despite the seriousness of the incident, the circumstances surrounding the missing samples remain unclear nearly three years after the initial report.
