Funding Woes Hit Victoria and WA Public Schools Despite State Aid Boost
February 29, 2024
Victoria's per student funding in public schools has dropped from $711 in 2019 to $570 in 2022.
Western Australia has seen a decline in voluntary school fee contributions from $357 to $294 per student since 2019.
State government funding in Western Australia, however, has risen to $18,435 per student in 2021-2022 from $16,652 in 2018-2019.
There is a noticeable income disparity among Western Australian schools, with Shenton College and Gilmore College earning $727 and $206 per student, respectively.
The Australian Education Union and Parents Victoria advocate for enhanced public school funding to reduce dependence on voluntary contributions and provide equitable, high-quality education for all children.
A 5 percent increase in public school funding by 2028 and the creation of a permanent public school capital works fund have been proposed by the union.
