A humpback whale entangled in 800kg of fishing equipment off the Gippsland coast was successfully rescued after a week-long operation.

The whale, measuring 18 meters, was first spotted near Loch Sport and later near Lake Tyers, where most of the ropes and buoys were removed.

A smaller section of rope could not be removed, but the whale was able to swim freely.

The rescue effort involved specialized crews from DEECA, Victorian Fisheries Authority, and Parks Victoria, and was described as a huge team effort.

The fishing gear is believed to be from an international vessel, and DEECA is investigating.
