Proton VPN Unveils Stealth Protocol and Expanded Network to Combat Global Internet Censorship
August 6, 2024
Proton VPN has launched new features aimed at combating censorship and protecting free speech globally.
As part of this initiative, Proton VPN is expanding its server network into 12 countries identified as high-risk for censorship, including Afghanistan, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia.
These servers will be strategically located in nearby areas, employing a 'Smart Routing' system to simulate an IP address of the target country.
A significant addition to Proton VPN's offerings is the new Stealth protocol, designed to bypass internet censorship and VPN blocks.
The Stealth protocol disguises VPN traffic as regular internet traffic, making it available for Windows users in addition to its previous availability on Android, iOS, and macOS.
Stealth is engineered for high performance and is compatible with Proton's VPN Accelerator technology, outperforming older obfuscation methods.
This protocol allows users to access censored sites and communicate freely on social media, even in restrictive environments.
The Stealth protocol is particularly beneficial in countries where VPNs are banned, helping users avoid complications during random device checks by law enforcement.
Additionally, a new 'Discreet Icon' feature for Android users allows them to customize the Proton VPN app icon and name to disguise its presence.
Proton VPN emphasizes its commitment to providing free internet privacy tools and encourages users to support its mission through paid plans for additional features.
David Peterson, General Manager of Proton VPN, noted the increasing trend of authoritarian governments enforcing VPN bans through physical inspections of smartphones.
Proton VPN was established in 2017 to provide a trustworthy and free VPN service, ensuring privacy and freedom worldwide.
