Sony Ups Gaming Revenue Forecast After Strong Q1; PS5 Sales Dip, Bungie Faces Layoffs
August 7, 2024
Sony Group Corporation recently reported its Q1 FY 2024 financial results, showcasing consolidated sales of 2.574 billion yen, a notable 12% increase from the previous year.
As a result of this strong performance, Sony has raised its gaming revenue projections for FY24 from $30 billion to approximately $30.9 billion.
The increase in operating income is attributed to strong first-party game sales, particularly from titles like Helldivers 2, and rising sales of PlayStation 5 peripherals.
In this quarter, Sony sold 53.6 million game titles, with 80% of these sales being digital downloads, reflecting the ongoing shift towards digital sales.
Software sales generated $3.30 billion in revenue, indicating nearly 20% growth year-on-year, while hardware revenue saw a significant drop of 21% to $990 million.
In the last quarter, Sony sold 2.4 million PlayStation 5 units, a decrease from 3.3 million units sold in the same period last year, bringing total PS5 sales to 61.7 million since its launch.
Despite the decline in unit sales, the PlayStation Network's monthly active users increased to 116 million, up from 108 million the previous year.
The gaming industry faces challenges with rising costs and limited pricing power, leading to significant layoffs at Sony-owned developer Bungie, which announced a workforce reduction of nearly 20%.
In the Music segment, growth was driven by increased streaming revenue and expansion in emerging markets, although the growth rate slowed to 6%.
Revenue from the Pictures unit grew about 5% to 337.3 billion yen, while Imaging & Sensing Solutions revenue surged 20.7% to 353.5 billion yen.
Looking ahead, sales for fiscal 2024 are expected to decline by 3.2% to 12.61 trillion yen, an improvement over the previously anticipated decline of 5.5%.
