Childcare Worker Jailed for Life on 307 Charges Appeals 'Excessive' Sentence
January 16, 2025
During the sentencing, Judge Paul Smith described Griffith as 'depraved' and highlighted the significant breach of trust in his role as a childcare worker, assessing him as having a high risk of reoffending.
Griffith is currently appealing his life sentence, claiming it is 'manifestly excessive,' with the appeal lodged on December 20, 2024.
These devices contained more than 600 images and 1,800 videos of child exploitation material, meticulously organized for his viewing.
Griffith was arrested in 2022 after police found over 4,000 images and videos of child abuse on his electronic devices, which documented much of his criminal behavior.
The abuse spanned nearly two decades, starting in 2003, and involved 65 victims, the youngest of whom was just one year old.
Griffith will be eligible for parole after serving at least 27 years, which would make him 71 at that time.
In addition to his life sentence, Griffith faces an arrest warrant for alleged child sexual offenses committed in New South Wales between 2014 and 2018.
He is also facing 180 additional charges related to offenses allegedly committed in Sydney.
His legal team filed the appeal before Christmas 2024, but it has yet to be presented in court, and the review process may take several months.
Ashley Paul Griffith, a former childcare worker, was sentenced in November 2024 to life imprisonment for 307 charges, including 190 counts of indecent treatment of children and 28 counts of rape.
The majority of his victims were girls aged between two and seven years, with most being between three and five years old.
Further details about the appeal process and its implications are expected to be provided in future updates.
