Uncontained Bushfire Threatens Lives in Wheatbelt; Residents Urged to Shelter as Heatwave Intensifies Blaze
January 24, 2025
Compounding the situation, a heatwave is expected to persist for another three days, complicating firefighting efforts.
A bushfire, first reported at 11:55 AM on January 24, 2025, has already burned approximately 50 hectares and is described as uncontained and unpredictable.
The fire poses a significant threat to lives and properties in the Wheatbelt town of Northam, as well as areas near Esperance, particularly in Myrup and Bandy Creek.
Authorities have warned residents that leaving their homes now could be deadly due to the fire's rapid progression.
Temperatures soared to 43.8 degrees Celsius, exceeding the predicted high, further intensifying the fire risk.
Residents in the area bounded by Spencers Brook Road, Wellington Street West, Morrell Street, and Jacamar Drive have been instructed to shelter inside their homes due to blocked evacuation routes.
Residents are advised to shelter in place, as it is too late to evacuate safely; those remaining should choose a room with running water and a clear exit.
Water bombers are actively responding to the blaze, which is being managed by the Shire of Esperance.
Those sheltering in place should close all doors and windows, turn off evaporative air conditioners while keeping water running through the system, and prepare to move to areas that have already burned if their home catches fire.
Evacuation centers have been established at the Northam recreation center for residents and the Greater Sports Ground for animals.
Northam detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire and encourage the public to report any suspicious behavior to Crime Stoppers.
The fire remains uncontained and is moving southwesterly, presenting an ongoing threat to the area.
