$1 Billion AMD-DOE Partnership Unveils AI Supercomputers Lux and Discovery for Scientific Breakthroughs
October 27, 2025
The U.S. Department of Energy has announced a $1 billion partnership with AMD to develop two advanced supercomputers, Lux and Discovery, aimed at addressing complex scientific challenges such as fusion energy, cancer treatment, and national security.
Lux will deliver approximately three times the AI capacity of current supercomputers, serving as a foundational platform for AI training, deployment, and scientific discovery.
The second supercomputer, named Discovery, is expected to be delivered by 2028 and operational by 2029, utilizing AMD's MI430 AI chips to enhance high-performance and AI capabilities for large-scale simulations.
These systems are designed to handle vast datasets and complex experiments, building upon the technology of the Frontier supercomputer, which was once the world's fastest and involved AMD.
The collaboration involves Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, emphasizing a public-private partnership model to foster innovation and reduce government costs.
The initiative supports the U.S. AI Action Plan by strengthening scientific innovation, national competitiveness, and establishing secure AI infrastructure, with over $1 billion invested from public and private sources.
AMD CEO Lisa Su highlighted that these supercomputers are among the fastest of their size, reflecting AMD's agility in AI and supercomputing projects.
The project aims to accelerate scientific discoveries in nuclear fusion, medical research, and drug development, with Lux also capable of simulating molecular-level drug responses.
Investors responded positively, with AMD's stock climbing to $254.41 recently, as the company shifts focus from consumer tech to AI infrastructure and government research.
Wall Street assigns AMD a Moderate Buy rating with a price target of nearly $250, indicating confidence in its growth prospects despite some caution due to high valuation metrics.
AMD's financial health remains strong, with high liquidity, low debt, and consistent revenue growth, though insider selling activity and high valuation metrics suggest some caution for investors.
This strategic partnership and technological advancement position AMD as a key player in high-performance computing and AI infrastructure, competing with industry giants like Nvidia and Intel.
