In August 2025, tariffs on Indian goods were increased up to 50%, including a 25% reciprocal tariff and an additional 25% duty linked to India's energy purchases from Russia, which has strained economic relations.

These tariffs, which have reached as high as 50 percent in some cases, have negatively impacted both economies and worsened diplomatic ties between the US and India.

The lawmakers emphasize that restoring strong US-India relations is essential for maintaining regional influence in Asia, especially amid recent remarks suggesting Washington's influence is waning.

Signatories of the letter, including prominent Democrats like Deborah K. Ross, Ro Khanna, and Pramila Jayapal, many representing districts with large Indian-American populations, stress the urgency of revitalizing the relationship.

These lawmakers warn that current policies threaten to undo decades of cooperation, including billions in Indian investments in the US and collaborations in technology and defense.

Former President Trump previously stated that the US had 'lost India and Russia to China,' highlighting concerns over the deteriorating relationship.

The letter underscores that the tariffs and tensions could undermine the longstanding partnership that has supported economic growth and strategic collaboration.
