A new blockbuster exhibition, Hallyu! The Korean Wave, opens at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra, showcasing Korea’s globally influential film, TV, fashion, and music.

Beyond displays, the museum offers a program of dance workshops and food classes to complement the experience.

During opening week, a towering Squid Game Young-hee doll will be prominently displayed in the forecourt.

The show provides historical context, tracing Korea’s cultural innovations from the early 20th century through Japanese colonization to its current status as a global cultural and economic powerhouse, including a replica of a 1377 movable-type printing press.

Iconic artifacts include PSY’s Gangnam Style pink suit, Squid Game costumes, and fashion from major K-Pop acts, with the entrance featuring the Young-hee doll.

Highlights also include the Parasite bathroom set, outfits from acts like ATEEZ and aespa, an interactive K-pop dance challenge, and a look at Samsung and the K-beauty industry.

National Museum Director Katherine McMahon emphasizes Korean culture’s global reach and the museum’s commitment to presenting living histories and contemporary developments.

An additional free atrium display explores evolving connections between South Korea and Australia, reflecting the Korean-Australian community and local creatives.

Victoria and Albert Museum curator Dr. Rosalie Kim highlights the creativity, dynamism, and global reach of Korean culture and notes Canberra as the final stop after venues in Boston, San Francisco, and Zurich.

The exhibition uses over 250 objects in an interactive, multi-sensory format to illustrate Korea’s influence across cinema, drama, music, fandom, tech, fashion, beauty, and food.

A programming season accompanies the show, including an opening weekend dance party, Korean feast, family festival, beauty tutorials, chimaek nights, and K-pop-inspired school programs.
