Spain’s Ministry of Defence has ordered 100 Airbus helicopters under the National Helicopter Plan to modernise its defence and security assets, spanning four contracts across all three branches of the armed forces.

The mix includes 13 H135s, 50 H145Ms, 6 H175Ms, and 31 NH90s to cover training, light attack, transport, and special operations roles.

Contracts are organized into four programmes: 13 H135s for training and light roles across the Air and Space Force and Navy; 50 H145Ms for the Army for training, light attack, utility and disaster relief; 6 H175Ms for government transport by the Air and Space Force; and 31 NH90s for tactical transport and special operations across the three services.

Airbus did not disclose the financial terms of the deal in its statements.

The order seeks to reduce fleet fragmentation and streamline training by concentrating procurement around Airbus platforms.

The plan, announced in May, is a defense modernization effort to boost Spain’s strategic autonomy within European defence.

NH90s will bolster tactical transport and special operations capabilities to enhance rapid deployment across services.

Six H175Ms will replace aging government aircraft and support a range of governmental missions.

Around €4 billion of the total will go to Airbus for platforms and government-furnished equipment, with budget ceilings approved by the Spanish Council of Ministers in recent months.
