WA Shires Secure $800K Each for Bushfire Mitigation to Safeguard Communities
December 18, 2025
Denmark and Jerramungup emphasize cautious, shire-led prescribed burning conducted in cool, stable conditions with attention to environmental, health, and safety considerations, and in cooperation with local Bushfire Ready groups.
Two Western Australian shires, Denmark and Jerramungup, each received more than $800,000 from the state Mitigation Activity Fund to help reduce bushfire risk and intensity.
The grants will support measures such as creating and improving firebreaks, mulching, ploughing, cultural burning, and prescribed burns on State-owned land managed by local governments.
Across six shires, a total of $4.24 million is allocated to plan bushfire mitigation strategies over the next three years, enabling longer-term planning without annual grant applications.
Emergency Services Minister Paul Papalia underscored the importance of mitigation to reduce risk, noting WA's high bushfire-prone area and the role of fuel management and firebreaks in protecting communities and aiding firefighters.
Both shires have histories of significant fires, including the 2022 Bayview Rise fire that affected Denmark and neighboring areas, influencing the drive for mitigation funding.
