New Hampshire Boosts Patrols for New Year’s to Combat Drunk Driving Under 'Drive Sober' Campaign
December 30, 2025
State law enforcement across New Hampshire will boost patrols on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day to deter impaired driving, under the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign running through January 1.
Residents are urged to plan ahead, choose a safe ride, and rely on ride-sharing, designated drivers, or public transportation to avoid driving after drinking.
More information on laws and prevention is available at highwaysafety.dos.nh.gov.
Officials urge planning for a sober ride home, noting penalties can exceed $10,000 in fines and fees, license suspension, or jail time for impaired driving.
A DUI can derail holiday plans and carries significant legal consequences, including fines, license consequences, and possible jail time.
Lt. Christopher Storm of the NH State Police emphasizes safe rides, including designated drivers, rideshares, taxis, or sober hosts.
Additional officers will be on duty to detect impaired driving and other traffic violations, aligning with national efforts to reduce alcohol-related crashes during festive seasons.
The enforcement push is part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, funded by NHTSA grants administered through the New Hampshire Office of Highway Safety.
As of 2025, 134 people have died in traffic crashes in New Hampshire, underscoring ongoing road danger.
Impaired driving was a factor in nearly 70% of fatal crashes in 2023 in New Hampshire, highlighting the holiday risk.
State data show 191 arrests for driving while intoxicated during the New Year’s holiday period (Dec 31–Jan 1) from 2019–2024, with over 700 crashes reported in that period.
Residents are urged to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911; the effort is funded by NHTSA grants to the NH Office of Highway Safety.
