A $700 million project called Winter Sports World is planned for Penrith in western Sydney, aiming to become Australia’s indoor snow resort and tourism icon, with backing from Bonski Group, the world’s largest indoor ski operator from Guangzhou.

Funding will come from a mix of domestic and international sources, with international investor interest noted but specific partners not disclosed.

The project envisions a year-round destination featuring a ski run, snow play, climbing facilities, a 4.5-star hotel, dining and retail options.

The development includes an Olympic-class ski run, a 4.5-star hotel, and restaurants, with construction expected to begin soon and an opening targeted for 2028.

Construction has been postponed from the planned year-end start to the first half of 2026, with a target opening in 2028, after an initial plan to open in 2025.

Key operators have been selected: Hammons Holdings will manage the snow attractions, and Trippas White Group will run food and beverage services.

NSW government granted significant development status in late 2024 after a decade-long approval process, describing the project as having an international, iconic appearance.

Costs have climbed from about $400 million in 2024 to at least $700 million due to a larger skiable area and expanded facilities.

The facility will offer beginner snow activities and lessons, while also enabling Olympic-level training, and will include a 200-room hotel.

The site sits on 2.35 hectares opposite the Nepean River in Penrith, acquired in 2009 and integrated into the Riverlink Tourism Precinct after rezoning for tourism.

Developers signed a memorandum of understanding with Bonski Group, signaling a milestone after years of delays.

The resort is expected to attract about 1.5 million domestic visitors annually, with strong international interest and a 300-metre ski slope using chemical-free snow from air and water.
