NSW Labor Unveils Green Space Plan, Housing Boom in Wentworth Park Redevelopment
December 8, 2025
This proposal arrives amid ongoing scrutiny of the greyhound industry and welfare concerns, fueling calls to phase out or ban dog racing in some jurisdictions.
The plan, backed by planning authorities, seeks to replace the dog racing site with shared community facilities, while the City of Sydney leads planning and consultation; it also aligns with housing targets and improved transport links, including a new ferry stop and upgraded light rail.
City leaders, including the Lord Mayor, acknowledge Wentworth Park’s historic value but support repurposing the site to benefit communities, housing, and public space while planning for future needs.
Plans foresee the current facilities being demolished when the lease expires in 2027, after which the land would be handed to the City of Sydney for development, with the state ready to implement rezoning to accelerate delivery if needed.
Transport and infrastructure emphasis includes a 15-kilometre coastal boardwalk, a Pyrmont Metro station by 2032, and improved access via the fish market and Glebe corridors.
The NSW Labor government unveiled plans to redevelop Wentworth Park, Sydney’s greyhound racing venue, into 3.3 hectares of community sporting fields and public green space, as part of a broader plan to deliver up to 7,300 new homes in the area.
Rezoning tied to Wentworth Park is expected to unlock housing density, contributing to a wider target that already includes about 4,800 nearby homes and a total Blackwattle Bay precinct goal of 7,300 new homes.
The Wentworth Park precinct will see the current greyhound track replaced, with surrounding land rezoned to accommodate up to 2,500 new homes alongside the already planned or approved 4,800 homes nearby.
The City of Sydney supports the redevelopment as essential open space and amenities to accommodate a projected population increase in Pyrmont over the next two decades.
Greyhound Racing NSW currently holds a lease until 2027 and sought a 20-year extension; the government plans a transition of racing to other tracks supported by a $10 million Greyhound Capital Grants Program for upgrades.
The government will coordinate with the City of Sydney to deliver timely rezoning and may undertake state-led rezoning if needed, alongside providing $10 million to support the transition of greyhound racing to other venues.
Mirvac is identified as the preferred developer for the old Sydney Fish Market site, with plans for 1,400 homes including 580 student housing units, aiming to begin construction by early 2027 pending approvals.
