Mistral, a rapidly growing French AI startup, announced plans to invest several billion euros in establishing its first data centre in France, a move that coincides with the AI Action Summit in Paris.

Co-founder and CEO Arthur Mensch revealed that the data centre is expected to be operational within a few months and aims to enhance Mistral's access to high-performance chips for AI model development.

The facility will utilize decarbonised energy, aligning with France's commitment to a low-carbon energy mix, primarily supported by nuclear power, making it an attractive location for data centres.

This investment is designed to strengthen Mistral's independence from US tech infrastructures like AWS and Microsoft, which it currently relies on for training its AI models.

Mensch emphasized that owning the data centre allows Mistral to control the entire value chain, from hardware development to software, promoting the development of open-source AI models.

Mistral has established itself as a leader in European AI by focusing on open-source models that rival those from major players like Meta, Google, and OpenAI.

In addition to its infrastructure plans, Mistral recently launched a mobile application for its conversational tool, allowing users to engage with the technology via smartphone.

The startup has formed partnerships with major companies including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and IBM, enhancing its product distribution capabilities.

Founded in April 2023 by Mensch and former Meta researchers, Mistral has quickly become a key player in the French AI scene, competing with major American and Chinese firms.

Mistral has achieved a valuation of approximately 6 billion euros, having raised over 1 billion euros in funding, including a significant 600 million euros in June 2023.

The startup has received substantial backing from major companies such as Nvidia, Cisco, and IBM, further solidifying its position in the AI industry.
