UK Launches National Campaign to Encourage Regular HIV Testing and End Stigma
February 11, 2025
A national campaign promoting regular HIV testing was launched in Wolverhampton on February 11, 2025.
Organisers, HIV Prevention England, emphasize that testing is the only way to know one's HIV status.
Councillor Jasbir Jaspal highlighted that an estimated 4,700 people in England are living with undiagnosed HIV.
Jaspal encouraged annual testing, noting that many people can live with HIV for years without symptoms.
Dr. Prita Banerjee from the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust stressed the need to end stigma around HIV and normalize testing for everyone.
Finding out one's HIV status allows for treatment initiation, maintaining health, and preventing transmission to others.
Testing options include sexual health clinics, GP visits, or ordering tests online, as part of National HIV Testing Week.
Residents are reminded that testing is free, quick, and confidential at sexual health clinics or GP offices.
Individuals diagnosed with HIV will have access to free treatment and support services.
