The Community Security Trust (CST) reported that antisemitic incidents in the UK for 2024 reached a staggering total, remaining 56% higher than the third-highest total recorded in 2021, reflecting ongoing tensions since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel.
Greater London and Greater Manchester accounted for 66% of the national total, with 1,847 and 480 incidents respectively, although both cities experienced a decrease compared to the previous year.
The report highlights a complex landscape of antisemitism in the UK, heavily influenced by international events and political discourse, with 52% of incidents linked to conflicts in the Middle East.
Of the recorded incidents, 1,844 involved discourse related to Israel, Gaza, and Hamas, with 1,533 reflecting explicitly anti-Zionist motivations.
The CST documented 201 assaults, 157 cases of damage to Jewish property, and 250 direct threats, indicating a troubling trend in antisemitic violence.
While reports of threats decreased by 20% to 250 incidents, abusive behavior accounted for 82% of all incidents, totaling 2,892 cases, although this figure represents a 17% decline from 2023.
Schools reported 260 instances of antisemitism, a slight decline from 335 in 2023, while higher education institutions faced 145 incidents, with 68% of university-related incidents referencing Israel.
Online antisemitism comprised 1,240 incidents, making up 35% of the total, with many linked to discussions about Israel and regional events, showcasing the pervasive impact of social media.
Lord Mann, the government's adviser on antisemitism, emphasized the need for action against the ongoing pervasiveness of antisemitism in British society.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper condemned antisemitism as unacceptable in the UK and announced a commitment of £18 million per year for the Jewish Community Protective Grant.
The report also noted significant political discourse, with 70 incidents tied to specific political parties, predominantly the Labour Party, reflecting ongoing tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
In total, CST managed over 6,000 reports in 2024, providing victim support, follow-up investigations, and security advice to those affected by antisemitic incidents.
