Grandfather Credits Home Screening Kit for Life-Saving Bowel Cancer Diagnosis
February 17, 2025
James Walker, a 70-year-old grandfather from Dromore, County Down, credits a home screening kit with saving his life after being diagnosed with bowel cancer in September 2021.
Despite having no prior symptoms, Walker's wife, Donna, encouraged him to take the at-home test, which ultimately led to his diagnosis.
Walker described his diagnosis as 'devastating' and emphasized the critical role of early detection in his survival.
As part of his treatment, Walker underwent keyhole surgery and chemotherapy, and he has been in remission for three years.
Now in remission, Walker enjoys activities such as walking his dogs and supporting his grandson's football team.
Dr. Rachel Orritt from Cancer Research UK stresses the importance of participating in screenings, as early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes.
Health Minister Mike Nesbitt also highlighted the necessity of participating in screenings for bowel, breast, and cervical cancers, stating that it could save lives.
In response to the need for increased screening participation, Cancer Research UK has launched a campaign in Northern Ireland to promote awareness of its importance.
In Northern Ireland, individuals aged 60 to 74 receive bowel screening kits every two years, but only 58% of those eligible complete the test.
Different eligibility criteria exist for various cancer screenings in Northern Ireland, including bowel screenings for ages 60-74, breast screenings for women aged 50-70, and cervical screenings for women aged 25-64.
The Health Minister reassures the public that screenings are safe and urges people to respond to their screening invitations.
Dr. Orritt urges eligible individuals not to ignore screening invitations, reiterating that early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes.
