Tesla Driver Fined for Doubling Speed Limit in Queensland School Zone, Sparking Safety Concerns
February 25, 2025
Queensland police have noted a troubling increase in deaths involving vulnerable road users, with pedestrian fatalities more than doubling from three in 2023 to eight in 2024.
On February 19, 2025, a Tesla Model Y was recorded speeding at 92km/h in a 40km/h school zone on Anne Street outside Keebra Park State High School in Southport.
The incident took place around 8:30 am when the vehicle sped past an unmarked police car, prompting a police pursuit that ended with the driver's stop on a residential street.
The school zone has a speed limit of 40km/h enforced during school hours, specifically from 7am to 9am and 2pm to 4pm, with the violation occurring just before 8:30am.
Chief Superintendent Garrath Channells of the Queensland Police Service condemned the extreme speeds near children, highlighting the critical importance of school zones for child safety.
The driver's speed was more than double the designated limit for the school zone, raising significant safety concerns.
Motorcycle fatalities also rose slightly, with 79 deaths in 2024 compared to 77 in 2023, prompting police to use this data for strategic officer deployment in 2025.
This incident underscores the ongoing issues with road safety in Queensland, particularly in school zones where child safety is paramount.
Bodycam footage from the police officer shows him questioning the driver about the dangers of speeding in a school zone, emphasizing the need for child safety.
Channells reiterated that extreme speeding near children is unacceptable and poses serious risks due to reduced reaction times.
The 38-year-old driver, a resident of Pacific Pines, was fined $1854 for exceeding the speed limit by more than 40km/h, resulting in eight demerit points and a six-month license suspension.
In 2025, Queensland has reported 37 fatalities on its roads, showing a slight decrease from 40 fatalities at the same time last year.
