Ex-AFL Player Shannon Cox Pleads Guilty to Attempted Murder in Fatal Crash
March 19, 2025
On March 19, 2025, former Collingwood AFL player Shannon John Cox pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder in the Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court.
The court has ordered a pre-sentence and psychological report, with sentencing scheduled for August 26, 2025.
During the court proceedings, Cox only spoke to plead 'guilty' to the charges.
Cox's lawyer, Paul Holmes, indicated that the guilty plea was made following legal advice.
Cox's guilty plea is related to a tragic car crash that occurred on June 9, 2023, resulting in the deaths of two elderly women, aged 82 and 83, who were traveling in a Suzuki Ignis hatchback.
The incident took place on the Brand Highway in Cooljarloo, approximately 170 km north of Perth, when Cox's Toyota Prado collided with the hatchback.
In addition to the fatalities, Cox's 12-year-old daughter was injured in the crash and required medical attention.
Emergency services responded promptly, deploying five St John ambulances and two RAC Rescue helicopters, although the helicopters were ultimately not needed.
