Kurt Cobain's Iconic Unplugged Guitar and Cardigan Headline London Exhibition
March 31, 2025
This exhibition announcement follows a recent BBC documentary commemorating the 30th anniversary of Cobain's death, which highlighted his profound impact on music.
Curated by rock journalist Alan di Perna and Gabriele Rossi Rognoni from the Royal College of Music Museum, the exhibition aims to celebrate the legacy of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana as a defining band of their generation.
The exhibition, which opens on June 3, will also showcase Cobain's legendary green cardigan, which fetched a staggering $334,000 at auction in 2019, making it the most expensive button-up ever sold.
Visitors to the exhibit will have the opportunity to engage creatively by dressing up and designing their own guitars to play Nirvana's songs on Guitar Hero 5.
In addition to the guitar and cardigan, the exhibition will feature other clothing items loaned by Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, further enriching the display.
The exhibition will also highlight a destroyed Fender Stratocaster, signed by all three Nirvana members, which adds to the narrative of Cobain's unique musical journey.
Released as a Grammy-winning album in late 1994, the performance is celebrated for its emotional depth and haunting renditions, particularly Cobain's cover of 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night'.
The setlist included celebrated versions of songs like 'About A Girl', 'All Apologies', and 'Come As You Are', alongside notable covers of David Bowie's 'The Man Who Sold the World'.
Cobain's green cardigan symbolizes his thrift-shop aesthetic and connection to the punk scene, reflecting his roots and alternative style.
Kurt Cobain's iconic 1959 Martin D-18E acoustic-electric guitar, famously used during Nirvana's MTV Unplugged performance, will be on display at the Royal College of Music Museum in London from early June to mid-November 2025.
Australian entrepreneur Peter Freedman, who acquired the Unplugged guitar for over $6 million in 2020, has loaned it to the museum and plans to launch a worldwide exhibition tour to support performing artists.
Nirvana's MTV Unplugged performance, recorded in November 1993, is hailed as a pivotal moment in rock history, featuring deep cuts and cover songs rather than the band's biggest hits.
